Cavill Mall Surfers Paradise
URPoint Details
Focal point of the Surfers Paradise experience is Cavill Mall, a pedestrian zone which was set aside from the famed Cavill Avenue in the 1970s. It is named after Jim Cavill, who built and operated the first Surfers Paradise Hotel in the 1920s and was largely responsible for re-naming the seaside teownship formerly known as Elston as the more marketable local name, Surfers Paradise, in 1933.
Cavill Avenue was by the 1960s also a top \'cruising\' destination for motoring enthusiasts, but this largely came to an end with the annexation of Cavill Mall.
Gold Coast City Council is currnetly undertaking a $3.5million redevelopment of Cavill Mall to boost its role as a key attraction and integrate the new Soul tower development, the improved Surfers Paradise Foreshore area and the proposed Civic Square redevelopment.
