URPoint Details
This URP is provided and maintained by members of the Geological Society of Australia as a geo-located community knowledge service.
This 145m high-rise is completely cladded with white granite and features porphyry from North Queensland on its pedestrian areas.
History:
This 145m high concrete building was constructed in 1993 and consists of 30 floors above ground level. The design architect was Robin Gibson and Partners. Its primary use is for government offices. 111 George Street is adjacent to 33 Charlotte Street and is connected with recessed entrances and an open foyer linked to 33 Charlotte Street.
A plaza links both 33 Charlotte and 111 George Street sites.
Building Materials:
The building has a complete white granite cladding on the facade. The white fine to medium-grained granite has distinctive black biotite and translucent grey quartz with massive white feldspar. It is likely that the granite was imported from Spain.
The stone covering the footpath, plaza, outside stairs and thoroughfares is a bluish-grey and oxidised brown quartz porphyry from the Rogina quarries (geological unit: Boonmoo Volcanic Subgroup), near Irvinebank and Herberton (commercial name: Australian Porphyry).
A sandstone relief features along the inside wall in the main foyer. It is titled "Traveling North"
