In 2009 King George Square was redeveloped to incorporate a major bus hub in two underground levels and to provide a new layout of the Square. This re-development was completed for the 150th Anniversary of Brisbane as State Capital of Queensland.

History:

The original Albert Square was part of an apron around the front facade of Brisbane City Hall. The square contained a fountain which separated two lanes of traffic.

Following the death of King George V in 1936 the square was widened to include the area which had been Albert Street and renamed King George Square.

The bronze Lion sculptures, which "guard" the King George Square entrance to the Brisbane City Hall, were initially set on large sandstone plinths as part of the George V memorial. This was unveiled in 1938 as a tribute to the King from the citizens of Brisbane.

When Albert Square was re-developed into King George Square, the existing fountain at Albert Square was relocated to Wynnum.

In the late 1960s buildings including the beautiful Tivoli Theatre which was located opposite the City Hall were acquired by the City Council, demolished and the area levelled to form a larger square.
