This hotel was originally Lennons Hotel and was named after the famous Lennons built on the corner of Ann and George Streets in the 1880s. This building was constructed in 1972 and was one of the tallest buildings in the city at that time. The name was then changed to the Chifley Hotel at Lennons and has now been renamed the NEXT Hotel.

The former Chifley Hotel building was refurbished in 1988 installing marble and granite furnishings to the basement and shop fronts, internal walkways and escalator foyers. In 2014 The front of the building was totally refurbished and the old main entrance remodelled to house a major retail area. The main entrance was moved to the right side with escalators leading up the an upper level.
Building stones
The Queen Street facade of the former Chifleys Hotel (pre 2013) previously featured a blackish green serpentinite marble breccia (probably of Italian origin) with interesting tectonic features.
