GSA Guide - Old State Government Offices - The Residences Claimed
URPoint Details
This URP is provided and maintained by members of the Geological Society of Australia as a geo-located community knowledge service.
Originally these premises housed hundreds of public servants and after a major refurbishment now contains up market residences. The buildings were refurbished in 1999-2000 and are now called the Residences.
History:
The Queensland and Commonwealth Governments each contributed half the land for ANZAC Square on the condition that buildings on either side of the Square would be similar.
Unfortunately, the Commonwealth did not fulfill their commitment and a glass and concrete tower was built on the Ann Street frontage. Initially the Queensland Government buildings housed various departmental offices. In 1999-2000 the buildings were converted to residential units.
Building Materials:
The lower facade of these buildings is Helidon Sandstone (Formation: Woogaroo Subgroup).
The base and plinth and various columns are Blackbutt Granite. Strongly textured marble from Ulam (near Bajool, Rockhampton) and Texas (near the Queensland - NSW border) was used for floors and panels.
