URPoint Details

This URP is provided and maintained by members of the Geological Society of Australia as a geo-located community knowledge service.

A purpose-built government building, which has served as headquarters for various government departments. It derived its original name by housing the Department of Mines and the Queensland Electricity Commission from 1985.

History:

This concrete, glass and steel building was purpose built to house the central offices of the Queensland Department of Mines and the Queensland Electricity Commission and, in addition, the Queensland Coal Board.

The 18 level building was officially opened on the 22nd of November 1985 by the Premier and Treasurer of Queensland, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen and named Queensland Minerals and Energy Centre (QMEC), even though it carried the logo of the Queensland Electricity Commission (QEC) on the roof.

Building Materials:

The red granite pillars and floor (rough surface on walkway and fine polish on edges) originated from Tunesia, North Africa and were placed in a refurbishment in the early 2000s. The walls in the foyer comprise a terrazzo that looks similar in colour and texture to the red granite but has rounded pebbles.
