A prime nine-floor shopping center in the heart of the CBD Brisbane, which is open to the public seven days a week.
History:
This building was built on the site of the old convict barracks. The original orientation of the largest building in the convict settlement determined the position and orientation of Queen Street.
From 1881 a row of buildings were constructed along Queen Street on various dates. These buildings were quite variable, but over time a drapery business operated by James Allan and Robert Stark purchased or leased these buildings.
Up to 1964 the business gradually expanded into the neighboring buildings which became known as the Allan and Stark building.
In the heritage register the Manwaring and Palings buildings are listed as separate entities. Business was then sold to retailer Myer in 1970. The current building was occupied by the former Myer department store from 1970 to 1988 when it moved to the Myer Centre on the opposite side of the Mall. In that time the retail space was redeveloped and refurbished with the heritage facade maintained.
