Tattersalls Club was founded in 1883 further up Queen Street. This building is now the home of 150 years of elegance and style. Club members can enjoy a range of facilities to entertain, unwind and indulge.
History:
In 1926 Tattersalla's Club moved into these premises designed by Hall and Prentice, architects of the Brisbane City Hall. A feature of the buildings design is a series of horse sculptures by Daphne Mayo that lined the original Queen Street entrance. When the Club was refurbished in 1990, the sculptures were moved to line the arcade from Queen Street.
Building Materials:
The Heritage Register indicates that the building has a concrete frame with stone facings. It has not been possible to determine the nature of the stone, however it has the appearance of Benedict stone which is crushed Brisbane Tuff bonded with cement.
Around 1926 this type of building stone was produced at the Benedict factory in Newstead. Brecciated and veined serpentinite marble imported from Italy was used at the base of the external pillars and as features in the arcade floor, together with white terrazzo tiles.
