URPoint Details
The Newstead gasometer is local landmark and today, some would say, an urban work of art. The stylish early 20th century steel frame of the Gasometer has been retained and is heritage listed in its own right. The gas tank itself -- some say the \'ugly part\' -- was removed in the 1970s when new gas transmission technologies meant gas storage in this manner was no longer best practice.
A gasometer is a large tank where gas is made and processed and right up until the 1970s they dominated the landscape of many Australian cities.
