North Sydney Anzac Memorial Club
URPoint Details
This site is currently under redevelopment by the North Sydney City Council. The club ceased operating in 2010 due to financial difficulties and the council is proposing to sell the site for redevelopment and use the proceeds for community facilities.
The construction of a what was formerly known as the ‘new' Memorial Club building was initiated by North Sydney Council during World War Two.
After a public meeting in 1941 a committee including members of returned service organisations helped with the design, furnishing and official opening of the new building.
The architectural plans survive in the North Sydney Heritage Centre collection. Two granite stones were set on 22 November 1941, one by ‘a citizen' the other by ‘a soldier'.
Later, probably in 1948, two large photographic montages by famed Australian cinematographer, Frank Hurley were installed in the Memorial Hall. The precious items of the club have been placed into storage for their proection while the plan is being developed.
