Since opening its studio gates in 1998, Fox Studios Australia has established itself as a leading film studio on the world stage. Today, Fox Studios is a filmmaker's paradise – offering choice, service and a wide range of ancillary services, within minutes of the Sydney CBD.

Fox Studios has movies like Wolverine, the Matrix trilogy, Mission Impossible 2, Australia and Superman Returns to its credit, among many other movies and TV productions.

Occupying a 32-acre-site, and just 15 minutes from the city centre, Fox Studios Australia is a major motion picture and television studio designed and tailored for 21st century productions. Providing facilities of the highest industry standards, the studio features eight sound stages, several production offices, workshops and over 60 independent entertainment industry businesses.

Fox Studios Australia houses post-production specialists in film editing, sound re-recording and mixing, including a 100 seat orchestral recording soundstage. The history of the site provides an eclectic mix of new and old buildings, and manicured landscapes create proportion and space. The on-lot building exteriors and beautiful landscapes provide excellent opportunities for exterior shoots.

Fox Studios Australia also boasts several facilities to make shooting incredibly comfortable and easy for both employees and talent. On-site retail and entertainment facilities are within walking distance of the studios – including shops, cinemas, cafes, restaurants, parks, major sporting facilities and entertainment venues.

Prior to 1998, the Fox Studios Australia site was host to Sydney's Royal Easter Show - the largest event held in Australia, and the sixth largest in the world. Since 1869, the Show has opened every year, except during the Spanish flu in 1919 and between the years of 1942 and 1946 when it was interrupted by World War II. The first Easter Show was held in 1823 and, in 1881, the New South Wales Government provided land for the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) at Moore Park where the show was held for 116 years. In 1998, the Show moved to a new showground and the former Sydney Showground at Moore Park became the home to Fox Studios Australia.

SOUND STAGES

Stage 1, the Raymond Longford Stage is the southern hemisphere's largest and is a restored heritage building built in 1928. Stage 1 was named after Australia's renowned silent era film director, Raymond Longford. Longford was an icon in the early days of motion pictures. From Raymond's first feature in 1911, The Fatal Wedding to The Sentimental Bloke in 1919 and his final feature, The Man They Could Not Hang in 1935, Raymond is immortalised in the Australian entertainment industry for his unwavering commitment to excellence. Stage 1 is a tribute to this remarkable man and provides productions with 38,000 sqft (3,535 sqm) of clear span floor space.

Whether it is Baz Luhrmann's Australia, Stealth's Fleet Command Ship, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in X-Men Origins or Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, Stage 1 has the history, capacity and shooting mood for mostly any production requirement.

Stage 2 is the Charles Chauvel Stage, a tribute to another early pioneer of Australia's motion picture production history. In 1933, Charles Chauvel directed Errol Flynn in his debut feature, In the Wake of the Bounty. Charles went on to successfully direct, write and produce a further 11 features and the highly acclaimed 1959 television documentary, Australian Walkabout. More recently, Stage 2 was transformed into The Daily Planet for Superman Returns, a production which had 80 percent of the entire shoot in the sound stages at Fox Studios Australia.

Stage 2 is the largest of the purpose built stages. Built in 1998, the stage provides over 32,000 sqft  (2,972 sqm) of floor space, and almost 50ft to the underside of the grid. Stage 2 also has a 10ft deep pit with removable cover, which can be flooded or alternatively used to extend the stage area depth. Stage 2's inclusions of office space, star rooms, cast rooms, a make-up room, greenroom, storage areas, kitchenette, air conditioning, toilets and showers and a large extras makeup area makes for the perfect production sound stage.

Stage 3 is named the Ken G. Hall Stage after one of the most important film directors in Australia's film history. Ken G. Hall led the charge in raising Australia's domestic film studio industry as both producer and director. Hall produced, directed and, at times, wrote almost two dozen features from 1928 to 1948. Ken Hall passed away in Sydney in 1994 and Stage 3, the Ken G. Hall, is named in his honour. Stage 3 is amply suited to meet the needs of smaller to medium productions and is an all-in-one sound stage offering. This stage comes with the benefits of a green room, star rooms, kitchenette, toilets, showers and much more. Stage 3 is a medium sized stage providing productions with over 14,000 sqft (1,300 sqm) of stage area.

Stage 4, The Franklyn Barrett Stage honours a man credited with filming the Melbourne Cup, start to finish. Named after English born Walter Franklyn Barrett who migrated to New Zealand in the late 1800s, Franklyn was credited as the first person to film the Melbourne Cup from start to finish. He was a reputable cameraman often recognised for his realistic photography. Stage 4 is just over 8,000 sqft (750 sqm). The Matrix used this stage for its famous \'Bullet Time\' scenes. Stage 4 has support space comprising of a small office area, toilets, showers and a kitchenette. Although used for screen productions since 1998, Stage 4 is also widely used for Television Commercial Productions.

Stage 5, the Hector Crawford Stage honours a name synonymous with quiz and game shows in Australia. Known for his high production values for television, the name Hector Crawford is iconic on the Australian landscape for quiz and game shows.  Stage 5 is suitably named in his honour as it presents the ideal television stage environment. Stage 5 was purpose built in 1998 to provide productions with a medium sized stage with lots of support space. The stage consists of a makeup room, star rooms, cast areas, dressing rooms, changing rooms, a green room and a rear storage area. It is ideal for a production with numerous cast.

Stage 6 pays homage to silent film director, Paulette McDonagh, and is named in her honour. In 1930 Paulette directed \'The Cheaters\', an Australian silent film lensed by Jack Fletcher. She went on to work as an art director whilst making a number of self-funded films through the late 20s into the early 30s. Stage 6 co-shares the same building complex as Stage 5, and provides productions with a small stage supported by a makeup room, greenroom, star rooms, cast areas, change rooms, toilets and showers. Stage 6 was originally built to cater for television productions. Underneath the protective plywood floor is a flat vinyl floor suitable for camera pedestals. The stage shares the rear storage, lockup and loading area with Stage 5.

Stage 7, the Commemorative Pavilion, is one of the visually grandest sound stages in the world. Originally named the Commemorative Pavilion in 1938, the building was a gift from the New South Wales Government to the people of New South Wales as a memorial to 150 years of British settlement and a celebration of Australia's modern and post-depression prosperity. The stage was opened 60 years later as a working sound stage with people marvelling at the remarkable Egyptian-styled Art Deco façade and the soaring stained-glass map of Australia. With its clear span created by large arches, this air-conditioned sound stage also provides make-up and wardrobe facilities.

Stage 8, the Hans Pomeranz Stage, remembers one of Australia's most accomplished screen editors. Born in Holland and raised during the darkest days of World War II, Hans immigrated to Australia in the 1950s. His first job was in Moore Park before moving on to the ABC. With film editing his strength, Hans went on to establish Spectrum Films in 1964 which moved to the newly built Fox Studios Australia in 1998. Stage 8 is purpose designed for easy bump in and out productions. An easy-to-access and economical choice for rehearsals, motion capture work, television production, TVC shoots or even music video productions. Stage 8 started life as a purpose built theatre and with growing pressure for more space, is now Fox Studio Australia\'s newest sound stage. This stage provides productions with 7,586 sqft (705sqm) of clear floor space. Stage 8 is also equipped with large dressing rooms, showers, toilets and greenrooms.

Our purpose built stages (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) have additional ‘Back of House' spaces available for use.
